!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , Saab, Airbus, Boeing, and Lockheed are in the running for supplying new jets, as the plan to buy just as old jets from Australia has been deemed a stupid plan. Hopefully Lockheed Martin stops complaining about being “unfairly treated”.

Not Dassau lt?
Quebec will never forgive this

Quebec’s too busy dealing with supreme court challenges to get mad about the jets.

They should get glorious Sukhois. The best, comrade

I’m sure flying a Russian jet would go swimmingly with our neighbours to the south.

Just dust off the Canuck, it’ll be fine.
I honestly love the look of the two engines.

SAAB

Well yeah, but the Aussies don’t. The government probably looked at Gumtree or whatever the Aussies use.

I always wondered, what would happen if we dusted off a biplane or something? Would modern jets even be able to fight it?

I predict Saabs. Cheap, and despite single engines, well tested in the cold desolate expanses of Sw eden. Though with Turkey getting kicked out of the F-35 program, there will be pressure to take up that slack. Boeing is toast after the whole regional jet debacle. By Airbus, I assume they actually mean the Eurofighter consortium (which is 46% owned by Airbus), but I think the Eurofighter is more than Canada wants to spend for a last-gen fighter (though it is probably the most similar to the canceled Super Hornet order.)

Gumtree - where 70 series grow on trees..

The Aussies knew what they had.

Modern heatseeking missiles would be able to pick up the heat signature of a piston driven engine, so yes.
Not sure about the bigger radar guided missiles.

See, we had (have?) a mandate for dual engines, but the F-35 is single engine, so that’s no longer a valid argument if they were considering that. Eurofighter would be sweet, but probably unlikely. I’m all for Saabs and trying to push away from relying on Americans for so much.
In any case, we’ll see what happens in three years.

Just dust off the Canuck Arrow, it’ll be fine
ftfy
I honestly think with updated software/radar it would still be serviceable. Loooooong way ahead of it’s time.

ARROW

Dief the Chief decided missiles were a better idea than the Arrow. The missiles we never ended up buying. He did a bunch of good things, but man, I am not a Diefenbaker fan.
At least all the Avro engineers went off to do cool other stuff.

Gripen or Eurofighter is my bet. Boeing shot itself in the foot, and the F-35 is too expensive. F-35 is also toxic politically
due to closeness of Lockheed
management with Trump.

I tend to think the twin engine thing was always a bit overplayed. If Sweden (Gi pens) and Norway (F-16's, F-35's) can deal with a single engine fighter, I suspect Canada can as well (especially since engines are more reliable than they’ve ever been, and having two tightly packed engines doesn’t provide full redundancy since a failure in one can easily destroy the other). We’ve had the same sort of complaining for the Navy, with people (possibly funded by Boeing) saying that Naval fighters need to be multi-engined, despite a long history of successful single- engine Naval fighters (conveniently forgotten about since aside from the Harrier, we haven’t operated a single engine naval combat aircraft since the Marines retired the A-4).

Yeah, makes sense. But to be fair, Norway and Sweden are both way smaller than Canada. Saskatchewan is larger than both. The territories are huge with sparse population and loads of space between airports. I get the concern for the two engines here.

But don’t get them started on the Nordiques.

I was going to say; the Clunk always struck me as kind of a dog. Now the Arrow, it’s a damn shame she never got a chance to truly strut her stuff .
